What the esthetician is doing with the blade

You fill out a short intake, then your esthetician reads the skin in good light and asks what you have been putting on it. A double cleanse follows: a blade needs a dry, residue-free surface or it drags. Blade work is 15 to 20 minutes of a 50 to 60 minute appointment. The other 35 or so minutes go to consultation, cleansing, a calming mask, serums and SPF 30.

Your esthetician holds the skin taut with one hand and works in short strokes: forehead, cheeks, jaw, upper lip, then the neck if you want it. Most people say it feels less like shaving than like having something brushed off. Nothing is left on your face afterward, which is why you can book at 5 p.m. and go out at 7.

Why the angle matters more than the blade

Held flat, a blade skims nothing off. Held steep, it nicks. The working range sits near 45 degrees, and keeping that angle around a curved jawline for 15 minutes straight is the part that takes training rather than nerve.

The upper lip, the neck, and where we slow down

The upper lip is where most people feel it, and where fine hair sits densest. Ask for the neck if you want it — a smooth face over an untouched neck shows in photographs. Skin over bone gets shorter strokes and lighter pressure.

Why your makeup sits flatter the next morning

This is the reason most people book a second one. Foundation is a film. Spread it over loose dead cells and a full coat of vellus hair and it grabs at both: texture around the nose, and by 3 p.m. a fuzzy jawline in every photo.

Take that layer off and the same foundation goes on thinner and sits more evenly. The product did not change; the surface did. It is the most obvious result of a dermaplaning facial, and what people mention at the front desk on the way out.

• Foundation applied 24 hours later usually needs less product for the same coverage.
• Powder stops catching along the jaw and upper lip, where peach fuzz shows under a flash.
• The effect is clearest for the first 7 to 10 days, then softens as the hair grows back in.

How often should you book a dermaplaning facial?

Skin turns its outer layer over on a cycle of roughly 28 days in your 20s, and closer to 40 days past 50. A dermaplaning facial takes off the cells that have finished that trip. Come back before the next batch has surfaced and the blade is working on skin that was not ready, which is where irritation starts.

So 3 to 4 weeks is the working rhythm, and once a month is the version people remember to keep. Twice a month is too often for nearly everyone. If you only want it ahead of specific events, 3 or 4 times a year is a sensible way to use it. There is no course you have to finish here.

If you also get waxed

Leave about 2 weeks between dermaplaning and waxing on the same patch of skin, in either direction. Both take surface skin with them. Doing the two within a few days is how people end up with a sore, lifted spot on the upper lip.

When to postpone dermaplaning

Dermaplaning should not be performed over inflamed, sunburned or broken skin. Your esthetician will examine your skin before opening the blade and may recommend moving the appointment if the skin needs more time to heal.

Nothing on our skin menu treats, cures or prevents a disease. Acne, rosacea and eczema are medical diagnoses with medical treatment behind them, and a licensed esthetician works alongside the person prescribing that, never in place of them. If a dermatologist is managing your skin, ask them first.

• Active or cystic acne: a blade across an inflamed pustule spreads bacteria over the cheek.
• A rosacea or eczema flare, until the skin has settled again, which is often 2 to 4 weeks.
• A sunburn less than 7 days old, or skin still peeling from one.
• Whatever you are already using on your skin at home: put it on the intake form, and your esthetician decides in the room whether to work lighter, skip an area or move the appointment.
• A cold sore anywhere on the face, until it has crusted and healed — usually 7 to 10 days.
• A raised mole, wart or skin tag in the blade's path: we work around it, and anything that has changed shape or color in the last 6 months belongs in front of a dermatologist first.
• Open cuts, cosmetic injections inside 14 days, or a chemical peel in the last 2 weeks.

Aftercare for the first two weeks

There is no recovery here in any real sense. What is true is that the surface layer normally buffering your skin runs thinner for about 3 days, and every line below exists because of that, not because a spa enjoys rules.

Daily sunscreen is the most important part of dermaplaning aftercare, even on cloudy days. The rest of the routine can stay simple during the first two weeks:

• First 1 to 2 hours: mild pink is normal, and it fades on its own.
• First 24 hours: no gym, no sauna and no hot shower; leave makeup off if you can, and do not pick.
• First 48 hours: keep the face out of direct sun where you can, and put a hat on for anything longer than 20 or 30 minutes outside.
• Every morning, and especially days 1 through 3: SPF 30 or higher, reapplied if you are outdoors.
• Day 3: the surface has caught up, the tight feeling is gone, and nothing about your week has to change.
• Week 2: no waxing on the same area, and the next dermaplaning facial lands around the 3 to 4 week mark.

Professional and at-home dermaplaning compared

At-home dermaplaning tools sell extremely well, and they are behind most of the nicked jawlines we get asked about. The blades are shorter, set in a plastic handle held at whatever angle your wrist finds, and often guarded so they lift almost nothing off.

The other half of the problem is you. You cannot see your own jawline in a bathroom mirror, cannot hold the skin taut and steer the blade at once, and will keep a blade for 6 or 8 uses because it still looks fine. In a treatment room it is used once, under light from the side.

What a home tool can and cannot do

It will take some fuzz off, and for plenty of people that is enough. It will not reach the working angle through a guarded head, and a blade on its 5th or 10th pass tugs rather than cuts. That tugging leaves the jaw red for 24 hours.

If you already dermaplane at home

Stop about 7 days before your appointment so we start on an even surface, and never take a blade over an active breakout. That is the most common way a single spot turns into a line of them.

Does the hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. That myth comes from shaving terminal hair — beard, legs — which is coarse and pigmented to begin with, so a blunt cut end feels stubbly within 2 days. A dermaplaning facial takes off vellus hair, a different thing entirely: fine, soft, mostly unpigmented. It grows back over about 3 weeks at the same texture.

Does it hurt?

Not really. Most people describe a faintly ticklish scraping, closer to an eraser than a razor. No numbing, no heat, no stinging. The 15 to 20 minutes of blade work is the least uncomfortable part of most facials — extractions are far worse. Say so if the upper lip feels sensitive.

How soon before an event should I book?

3 to 5 days out is the sweet spot. Any flushing has settled by then, the surface is at its smoothest, and makeup goes on in the thinnest film it will manage all month. The morning of a wedding leaves no room if your skin stays pink for 2 hours.

Can I get a dermaplaning facial if I have acne?

Depends on the state of it that week. A couple of small blemishes or closed comedones can usually be worked around. Active inflammatory or cystic acne cannot: a blade across an inflamed pustule spreads it. Acne is a medical condition — a licensed esthetician works with your dermatologist, not instead of one.

Can this replace waxing for facial hair?

No — they are aimed at two different kinds of hair. Dermaplaning cuts fine vellus hair at the surface, so it is back in about 3 weeks. Waxing pulls coarse, pigmented hair out from the root, which is why a brow, lip or chin wax holds 3 to 4 weeks. Dark and wiry? Book the wax.

How is this different from a chemical peel?

Mechanism. One takes the dead layer off physically with a blade, and you leave with nothing to hide. A peel uses acid to loosen the same cells, and depending on strength it can bring 3 to 5 days of flaking. Do not stack the two in one week; leave 2 weeks, and mention a recent peel at intake.

What should I tell the esthetician before we start?

Everything you are putting on your face at home. That is what the intake form is for, and the 2 minutes it takes to fill in beats a wasted appointment. Add recent sun, a cold sore, anything a doctor has you using, and a peel or a wax inside the last 2 weeks. Your licensed esthetician reads it, looks at the skin under good light, and either works around it, reshapes the 50 to 60 minutes on the spot, or moves you to another day.

Is dermaplaning safe during pregnancy?

Dermaplaning may still be an option when acids and peels are not, but pregnancy can make skin more reactive and lying flat may be uncomfortable later in pregnancy. Let us know you are pregnant when you schedule so we can adapt the products, pressure and positioning. Always follow your prenatal care provider's advice.

Will one session fix my texture, pores or fine lines?

No. One appointment is a reset, not a rebuild. What it reliably does is take the dead surface layer and the vellus hair off, so skin looks brighter and smoother for 2 to 3 weeks. Pore size does not change. Deep lines do not change. Rough texture improves for a while, then comes back.
